Once you have the reader, you may need to install any necessary middleware for it to function properly. First, you will need to obtain a card reader that is compatible with your CAC card. Getting your CAC card reader to work is a relatively simple process. Finally, when visiting a secure website that requires authentication with a CAC card, Safari will prompt you to choose which certificate to use. Right click on the certificate you need to authenticate with (usually the Identity or email signing cert) and select “New Identity Preference.” You can then configure Safari with this preference so that it will use your CAC card for authentication. In Keychain Access select the CAC keychain from the sidebar, then select “My Certificates” from the “Category” section. Once that is done, you can insert your CAC card into your computer’s card reader and open Keychain Access. To use a CAC card on Safari, you will need to first install the ncessary drivers for your CAC card. That’s it – your Mac will now be enabled with a smart card!
